Most people think of orthodontics as something that is carried out to improve appearance. This is certainly one of the major reasons why people want to have orthodontics in Kent, but it’s not the most important. Although it’s nice to have a beautifully straight and even looking smile, it’s always far more important that your teeth and gums are healthy, and this is where orthodontic treatment can really help.

If your teeth aren’t aligned properly in your mouth it can create a number of problems. If some of your teeth bite together before others, then they can be subjected to much greater forces than the rest of your teeth. This could lead to them chipping or cracking, or to developing abnormal wear patterns, and it could even lead to tooth loss. At the very least you’re likely to need restorative dental treatments such as crowns or even bridges. Teeth that are subjected to heavy biting forces are more likely to exhibit something called Abfraction, which is where a notch appears in the base of the tooth, weakening it and increasing the likelihood of decay. In addition having problems with your bite can create various other problems.

For example, teeth that are crowded are more likely to harbour plaque bacteria, and this can lead to gum disease and eventual tooth and bone loss. If your teeth are spaced too far apart then you’re likely to find irritating pieces of food to get trapped in between them. This is something that can also increase the risk of gum or periodontal disease, and you may also find that your gums are tenderer due to small pieces of food digging into them.

Having your teeth straightened will make it much easier for you to maintain good dental health, and your teeth and gums are likely to remain in good condition for far longer with much less effort. You’re less likely to require expensive and extensive treatment for gum disease or tooth decay, or treatment to restore teeth that have been damaged by your bite.
