Dental bridges are often used to replace missing teeth, and they can look very good. A dental bridge uses the teeth adjacent to the gap created by one or more missing teeth as anchor points or abutments. These abutment teeth have to be ground down and crowned, and the crowns are attached to the replacement teeth. Each replacement tooth is called a pontic, and two abutment crowns can be used to support a single pontic, or several pontics.
Dental bridges can be constructed using a variety of different materials. The choice can depend on the location of your teeth, and your budget. The most cost-effective bridges are made from a non-precious alloy, and this alloy can either be polished, or it can be covered in porcelain. However most bridges are made from a higher quality semi-precious or precious metal alloy, which again can either be covered with porcelain, or simply polished. Porcelain fused to metal bridges will look pretty good, and are suitable for replacing front teeth. However anyone who is particularly concerned about the cosmetic effects of their tooth replacement may want to choose an all-ceramic bridge.
All-ceramic bridges have a base made from an extremely hard substance called zirconia. This has a high tensile strength and can withstand large forces. The zirconia base is milled from a single block, before being heated to create the framework. The zirconia framework is then covered with several different shades of porcelain to give a lifelike appearance. The lack of metal in the bridge gives it a natural vibrancy that is comparable with ordinary teeth.
